Why Habits Work Better Than Goals
We’re well into the year now and I'm sure you're reading articles about people who've set resolutions or goals and are now letting them slip away.
Resolutions and goals are all well and good but I’m far more interested in the habits that we have day to day.
The reason we want to create habits is because they make our life easier, not harder, and they provide daily, immediate rewards.
A lot of people think they don't have time for habits or that habits are too hard. But I promise they’ll make life so much better.
Here are three to get started on:
Planning the evening before
We make 30,000 decisions a day and I bet mums make even more decisions.
This includes what coffee cup we're going to use in the morning, what socks we're going to put on our kids, what yoga video we're going to do in the morning.
Even though we might feel depleted at the end of the day, just take a few minutes to make some of those decisions for tomorrow ahead of time.
You can literally make up to 1000 decisions in those few minutes.
So the night before - make it easy on yourself and get set up for the next day.
Alone time in the morning
Taking a little bit of alone time in the morning is going to help you be far more relaxed and energised in the day.
I don't mind what you're doing. It's just about getting a little bit of time to yourself before your kids wake up to fill your own bucket.
So whether or not that's a hot shower, or doing a little bit of work or doing that yoga video we chose the night before, whatever helps you in the morning that is a habit that is going to help so much and if you want more information on morning routines, read this post.
Creating an easy daily plan
Having a daily plan is going to help you manage life much more easily, even if you feel like a scattered mess at the moment.
It's really normal to feel pulled in all sorts of directions with parenting, work, home, friends, whatever it is on your plate, and that can breed a feeling of resentment and a general feeling of blah, about life.
This is 100% normal.
But if you have a plan, you're going to feel less scattered, you're going to actually allocate time for all the areas of your life and you're going to take back control of your day by implementing your plan.
Habits have changed my life. They have changed my clients’ lives.
This week choose one to implement - a little bit of time in the morning, or the evening, or time planning your day. Implement that one and then add the next habit.
