Why You Can’t Get On Top Of It All
We make an estimated 35000 decisions a day…
(And as women often running the household and working, I’d guess it’s even more than that.)
If you sleep for 7 hours a night, that’s about 2000 decisions per hour while you’re awake.
Most of these decisions are made by our subconscious mind, so we don’t have to actively decide again and again (I’ll brush my teeth, I’ll eat breakfast, etc may be ones on auto pilot for you).
This has a benefit and a drawback...
Subconscious decisions can also work against us.
They can look like:
I’ll snooze the alarm and stay in bed
I’ll do these easy work tasks instead of the meaty task I need to do
I’ll stay up and watch more Netflix instead of going to bed early
They feel quick and full of relief, but later they often bring us some regret.
This is where the conscious mind comes in – and why I love planning so much.
I know the last thing I feel like doing in winter is getting up and going for a walk at 6 am. But I also know that if I've a busy day, I love that the walk is done; I feel like I’ve had time for myself, and it’s great for me physically.
I know on Thursday I’d rather respond to client messages and check my Instagram likes over creating a new workshop for you (even though I love doing this, it’s ‘more work’ in my mind!) Which is why I plan it ahead on a Sunday and make sure I have steps to pick a topic, validate it with you, write the copy, set up the tech, etc.
Conscious decisions are what move us closer to our goals and the person we want to be.
I talk all about this process inside the Plan Your Week workshop (you can join here).
